Week 7 – heaven!

Well not exactly!

It is great to be back with a new module this week.  We had a great week off and I did spend it doing a lot of review and also exploring in the different libraries that we have available to us.  This week introduced us to the world of vegan and nutrient dense eating.  Lectures by Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Joel Fuhrman.  In the spirit of bio-individuality, I am glad to learn about their perspective and I take some of what they say and will try it but I know what is right for me and will not go crazy.  However, the important thing is to be able to think and process the information and perhaps somewhere in there is a nugget of information that will help someone I know or am lucky enough to coach.

IMG_3143We met our new grand-dog this past weekend when on a trip to visit our daughter in Asheville.  He is adorable and she is smitten.  Here is a photo of them on the top of a mountain.  I just put it in because it is a gorgeous picture and everyone loves pictures of puppies.

Big challenge for me in the coming week.  We are off on vacation and even though I will have internet where we are headed and I am determined not to let up on the commitment, it is almost super human to give up the sun, sea and surf for watching video lectures and taking notes and keeping up with the class conversations on-line.  This may fall under one of the Primary Food categories which might just make it a bit easier.  Primary foods are Relationships, Exercise, Career and Spirituality.  Hmm, I would guess Relationships?

We learn to put people first and we learn to put ourselves first so we can take care of others.  This week we also had our eyes opened to improving our relationship with each other through safe communication.  I loved that lecture.  Intuitively I know about it but it was good to have a refresher course.  Somehow, if you have made it to 46 years of marriage and you have a pretty darn healthy relationship with spouse and children and you are lucky enough to have a cadre of good friends, you sort of get something right about relationships.  The judgmental thing is always something I need and want to pay attention to.

efm_logo_transparent Some years ago, my honey and I took the EFM course (Education For Ministry) which is a four year course through the University of the South and one of the areas of improvement I identified was one of  being judgmental.  Well guess what, it has come up again.  I am very judgmental about myself and know that I can be kinder.  I do think I have made some progress in the last nine years and frankly, just being aware of that tendency is going to make it better.

We are off to Mexico with our long-time friends, Tom and Rosemary Baxter.  We all met 44 years ago in the hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.  Rosemary and I delivered our first children, Katie and Maura, within two hours of each other.  I heard this woman talking on the phone about her beautiful baby and while I was in a slightly drugged state she was full of chatter.  I thought to myself, please don’t let her be my roommate I need peace and quiet.  Right!  Rosemary turned out to be my roomie and one of my most trusted and dear friends.  Still waiting on the peace and quiet part!!!!!

IMG_1312My mum is having radiation treatment this week and next.  She is 90 and is not amused.  However, she is very brave and I applaud her for going ahead with it.  She says she feels great and doesn’t really think she needs it but not worth the risk.  Here is Mum on her 90th birthday with my brother and my sister and me.   Way to go Mum!!!

Hope everyone has a great week.

Lou
