Hallowe’en in New Orleans
My niece chose to be married in New Orleans on the 30th of October and that just happens to be Hallowe’en weekend and the VooDoo festival. To say that it was a crazy place to be is just putting it mildly. It was a beautiful morning when we left Canada to drive to the airport and fly to New Orleans, an all day affair since we were flying out of Hartford, Connecticut and we had to drive five hours to get there. We arrived after 12 hours of travel to a fun B & B that my sister and I found. The Green House Inn is located in a perfect spot for walking everywhere you might want to walk in NOLA. We did plenty of that, a good thing because there was a lot of fabulous eating going on as well. There are so many wonderful restaurants and we have our favorites and wanted to share them with my sister and her husband. Weddings are a wonderful excuse to travel and to get together with family and friends especially those you haven’t seen in quite awhile. My husband, John, was asked to be the officiant by the bride and her now husband and he and they put together a truly beautiful and meaningful service. It was clear by the expression on their faces that they enjoyed every minute of it and we the witnesses did too. It is a rare occasion when my sister and brother and I are together and someone actually gets a photo of the three of us. When we were at the reception following the wedding someone caught us on camera. We figured out that the three of us have been married to our individual spouses for a total of 115 years. My sister is the next one to have a wedding for a child of hers, but that won’t happen until October of 2016 so we will have a little time before then. I loved the whole thing and I used the 80/20 rule and just enjoyed myself, tried to eat wisely but also to enjoy the local food. It is without a doubt one of the harder things to do when traveling and eating out for pretty much all your meals. The nice thing is that Louisiana has a lot of wonderful seafood. Thank you NOLA for a wonderful time once again.
Another Milestone
This week also marked another milestone in my journey through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) with the successful completion of all the graduation requirements. There are still a few more things to do, but the pressure is off. I do believe that I will probably just be moving to a different area in this adventure. Now I have to get serious, as if I wasn’t already, about building a practice that is right for me and those I wish to help in their own journeys to health and wellness. Truly life is an adventure and every day seems to bring more diversity and problems to try to solve using the skills and knowledge that I have picked up over the past 11 months. Our coaching sessions are helping us figure out what path to take and we are encouraged to just take that first step. If you think you want to give workshops, then take a step to find a place where you might give one. If you are looking for partnerships, figure out who might make a good partner. If you just want private clients or if you prefer to work with groups, there are so many possibilities and there is no one right way to do this.
We focused not only on marketing but also on the brain. This was quite an eyeopener for me. Our guest lecturer was Dr. Daniel Amen, MD whose lecture on brain health and the Alzheimer’s epidemic is poignant. As weight goes up, brain function goes down. The real key is to be as healthy as possible. Watch your weight, keep your mind active, clean up your environment as much as you can and keep the bad habits at bay. Since I was away I haven’t been cooking but there are recipes on the website so please give them a try and let me know if there is one you really like. They come from the IIN Recipe feed. Enjoy.
We are again in New Hampshire with our wonderful grandchildren as their mother is off in Thailand for 10 days. We are so lucky to be able to do this and to spend some very real time with them. Interesting house things going on and for awhile this winter we might just be homeless. As I said earlier, life is an adventure.
