Week 5 – Thrive and Survive

What a week!

John and I finished, successfully, our 10-day sugar detox.  We high-fived each other, patted ourselves on the back and resolved to continue in a more moderate way but first we were going to try and survive vacation.

It is very, very difficult to transition quickly from a controlled and mutually supportive environment into one filled with restaurant meals and temptations galore.  Monday and Tuesday were fine.  We actually imagehad leftovers from two meals and since we were leaving for vacation we decided to eat up all we could.  I had some leftover cauliflower and found a great recipe for cauliflower mashed potatoes which was delicious.  Here we paired it with the stuffed chicken breast on spinach.  Yum!  The final results were John down 9 pounds, blood pressure was very stable and he noticed a big improvement around his waist.  I was down 6 pounds, blood pressure excellent and my blood sugar stayed consistently between 90 and 95.  Yippee.

imageWednesday I had planned to go into Montreal to see my mothers new stairlift and to check on my sister and her broken ankle.  That was not to be.  I went for a great walk, then to my new favorite yoga class and came home to John having a crisis because his passport had expired and we were leaving for Mexico in 5 days!  To be fair, we use the passport card to cross the border and his does not expire until 2018.  The assumption was the passport was the same.  Lots of scrambling took place and we found a passport office in Portsmouth, New Hampshire that could issue same day passports.

imageSince my family calls me the lemonade queen I decided to take advantage of the situation and booked us into a funky boutique Inn and make a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant in Portsmouth.  Both were a success.  I think we were the only patrons in the Inn which was in an old factory near the waterfront.  We had told ourselves we would have a cocktail or glass of wine to celebrate and try to make a fish choice for dinner.  Both were accomplished with success.  White wine raises my blood sugar, red seems to lower it.  Who knew?

Early the next morning we were at the passport office at 8am and John was in and processed and out before his 8:30 appointment, with the promise his passport would be ready in a couple of hours.  It was, in fact, ready by 10:15am.  Huge sigh of relief!  This was without a doubtimage the best government experience either of us had ever experienced.  The people at the office could not have been nicer or more accommodating.  They know customer service almost in the Disney tradition.

Thank you National Passport Center.  You made our day and our trip.

Meanwhile during all this our daughter Katie received, negotiated and accepted an offer on her house that she has been trying to sell for 18 months.  Never a dull moment.  She needs to find a place to live and move by the 15th of March.  I guess I know what we will be doing when we return from vacation.  I am so very grateful for our 10 days at Spa Moses.  It was so calm and relaxing and healthy with improved sleep and health.  We are ready.

Have a wonderful week everyone.
