Week 51 – Christmas Week

Well we finally got the big snow that NEWA(North East Weather Alert) has been calling for in the last couple of weeks. It was a doozy. Heavy wet snow and 18″ of it here at our house. It started snowing Thursday night and kept at it all day on Friday and through Friday night. We woke up Saturday morning to a winter wonderland. Our wonderful neighbor who plows our driveway came to dig us out and he had to actually plow our street out before he could get to the driveway. He even shoveled where he couldn’t get with the plow. He cares about his old neighbors!!!

Wyke is Happy

Wyke loves the snow. He has since he was a baby and he saw his first snow in North Hatley. He is back lying in his favorite spot in the snow. Bean is not so impressed as she can’t really move in the deep snow so John has to use the snow blower and make her a path to run around the side of the house to check on the critters in the wood pile. It also makes it easier for him to get the wood for our nightly fires. We have not had many outdoor walks this week. It is actually safer on the treadmill or bike. The roads are slippery and the snow is deep. So mostly short walks down to the turn around and back.

Tuesday I drove to North Hatley for a lunch with my Grace Ladies. This is a wonderful group that is comprised of members of the Anglican church as well as community members. We meet every Tuesday morning for coffee and chat and maybe some caring thoughts for those who need it. They also serve tea at The Grace Home on Thursday afternoons when Covid is not busy. I join them by Zoom when I cannot be there in person. It was a long day but a beautiful drive and I am glad I went.

Exercise for Me

Most days I can hop on the treadmill and do a good workout. I managed to get in four days this past week. I seem to enjoy 30 minutes, then a 10 minute cool down and then 20 minutes of yoga. It makes a great start to my day. Friday, because of the storm, Katie was home working in her office so I needed to change things a bit. I got out the bike for the first time since last spring and did a great workout. Since it is a modified bike I have to put the program up on the tv. I was surprised at how I actually remembered how to do it and the cadence sensor still works. It will display my heart rate but it wasn’t syncing with my watch for some reason. It’s not a Pelaton bike but a cheap $120 bike from Amazon but I have made it work with the Pelaton app which I am pleased about. Put your mind to something and you can usually make it work.

Reverse Advent Calendar

I finished it! Since I started on the first Sunday of Advent rather than the first of December, I finished it yesterday. Today, the fourth Sunday of Advent, I delivered it to the local Kearsarge Food Pantry. It felt a little bit like a secret Santa because no one was there so I just left it. I did leave the paper describing it however in case anyone wondered at the assortment of goods.

Cooking is Happening

Katie and Libby have gone to Portsmouth to pick up Jack who drove there with Margot from Asheville, NC. Since it is Sunday we traditionally have home made pizza for supper. Libby put me in charge of making the pizza dough. My first time doing it. I admit I had to ask her for some guidance but hopefully it will be fine. I read a very funny story about a mother who posts her Christmas food options and menus for the holidays for her family. I got quite a kick out of it so I made my own and sent it to the family. That’s when I realized how much fun it is to have things to cook and a plan to follow when you are going to have a lot of people coming and going over the holidays. John is making Split Pea Soup, I am making Big Batch Adventist Soup and homemade bread for lunches. Dinner menus are pulled together but we will all take turns cooking. There is something to be said for living in a house with real chefs and all our family (except me) are incredible cooks. They make fun of me and the mess I make. It just doesn’t come naturally to me but the things I do make I do pretty well.

This picture reminds of when I was a child and we would put fake snow on the windows. This time mother nature did it for us.
