The significance of 40 weeks
Well, we could have made a baby by now! Just amazes me how the time has flown by. I am really excited about getting to the end of the course but am also excited about where I will go from there. After all the upheaval of the last couple of weeks it feels as if I am on the right track again. Had the most wonderful day on Thursday. Beautiful walk around the lake in the morning, cool, crisp autumn air and sunshine. Worked with a client and then did some serious cooking in the kitchen. I made the Chili from last week’s blog and it was/is delicious. Lots of peeling and chopping of vegetables but I found myself actually enjoying it. That afternoon I attended an on-line seminar which had participants video conferencing with the presenter. Really enjoyed that and learned quite a bit about running an on-line presentation with interaction. Following the seminar I received a request from a classmate in Alberta, Canada, to participate in a Skype Health History. It was a full day and gave me a much needed boost.
Sleep – get your ZZZ’s
Our focus this week was on Sleep. Syncronicity again in that my email inbox was full of articles written by various experts with recommendations about sleep and also about melatonin. I have used melatonin successfully off and on for many years. We don’t make as much of it as we get older and sometimes I find myself waking up at three a.m. and unable to go back to sleep. Frustrating to say the least. Mostly I overreact to medications but I have been lucky on the occasions where I needed a little assistance that this has worked for me. The lecturers recommend a routine and strongly recommend that one cut off electronics one to two hours before bed. All recommend at least seven to eight hours of sleep and I must say that I feel better when I get that amount of sleep regularly.
Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post was one of the speakers and I found her just charming and funny and full of good advice. She very strongly recommends that you not use your cell phone as an alarm clock and that you not charge it in your bedroom next to your bed. She said to buy a simple little clock and use that if you need an alarm to wake you up. She believes in this so much she gave all her friends little alarm clocks as gifts to encourage them to put their cell phones away. Once again it is worth an experiment to see if this makes a difference. I do not have my cell phone in my bedroom but I do have my iPad but it is on silent so it does not wake me up. Perhaps I should put it in another room too. Am looking forward to her new book The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night At A Time, on the science, history and mystery of sleep, which will be published on April 5, 2016.
Winter is coming
We have now had our first snow and real cold. Below freezing last night and the hanging plants are done. We put away the summer furniture from the porch and John put up the winter porch. Here in Canada if your house doesn’t have a vestibule between the outside door and the inside door then the cold just comes blowing in when you open the door. We put up a temporary vestibule so there is an airlock of sorts, a barrier between the inside hall and the wind and snow outside. It makes quite a difference. So stocking up the firewood, making wonderful warm soups to get us through the colder months and we are preparing for the winter.
Wishing someone a very happy 95th birthday
I don’t have a lot of friends who are 95 years young but on Saturday, John and I had the privilege of celebrating the 95th birthday of our good friend Art. His daughter is my walking partner and over the years we have spent quite a bit of time with Art. He is in a nursing facility now but he is as sharp as ever. He enjoys a special treat now and then so we arrived to celebrate with South Carolina shrimp and Pinot Grigio, lots of birthday cards and presents as well as lots of chocolate. You know, if I make it to 95 that is exactly the kind of birthday I would want to have. Don’t forget the wine and chocolate!!!
New Option on Website
I added the ability to fill out a Health History form on-line. My testing group have approved it so it is now live and can be found on the website under Health Forms by clicking here. I need lots of practice so would love it if you would fill out the form and then give me an opportunity to chat with you about what you put on the form and also get your impression of whether it is easy or needs improvement. All information is confidential between you and me as the Health Coach.
We have a week off, no new lessons this week and no Coaching Circles. This is a good week to regroup and to plan ahead. The next few weeks will be busy ones.
