Week 32 – now what do I do?

IMG_8592My grandchilden went home this week.  Now what do I do with myself?  I have had such a wonderful time with Libby for eight (8) weeks this summer.  She and I have experimented with foods and cooking to help her to improve her skin and her digestion and we have learned a lot in the process.  Having Jack here for 10 days after camp was just wonderful.  He is one of the nicest young men you can imagine.  My gentle giant (he is 6′ tall already and only 14) with the kindest most generous heart ever.  Now my house is quiet and neat and just a tad bit empty.  I miss the bustle and the giggles and the slamming doors.  But, it is nice to be back to being just us again.  John was gone for two days and I was alone with the three cats and the two dogs.  So no, I was not alone.  Meals are much simpler and my grocery bill is much smaller.

My mother and I went out for lunch on Friday, the anniversary of my father’s death, and we toasted him.  I have begun asking her questions about him and was very interested in the reasons he changed jobs and why they decided to move.  We talked a bit about what I remember from being a child and living in the various places we lived.  John and I often say we wish we had had more of a chance to know Dad as adults.  We were such children still when he died.  I will say we also toasted two other people at lunch.  My niece, Krista, was born on that same date 12 years later.  Thus she turned 30 on Friday.  I also discovered that my cousin Joan has a granddaughter who was born on that date eight (8) years ago.  Her name is Kate.  It was a lovely, lovely lunch.  To top it off, we heard a very funny bird sound coming from near the water where we sat and we couldn’t figure out what it was.  Just as we mentioned it to each other the most beautiful bald eagle took off from our left and flew right across the lake in front of us. Mum has a little trouble with her eyesight from Macular Degeneration but she said she could see the white of his tail as he flew away.  What a special treat.  If you believe birds are messengers from the beyond the noise this fellow was making means he had a lot to say.

My work this week with school and my practice is changing and growing.  I have had some interesting discussions with a variety of folks this week including a Naturopathic doctor and a clinic director and a couple of potential clients.  Our lessons have been focused on figuring out what our target market is.  There is a lot of work to be done in this lesson and a lot of thinking.  One colleague said she took six hours to answer just one of the questions.  What I learned that really resonated with me is that my target market IS me.  I want to help people who find themselves in a situation similar to mine.  Since I have been there and overcome the obstacles  associated with diabetes, poor health and being overweight, I believe I can help others do the same thing.  Despite my recent heart issue I am actually very healthy now.  I lost 50 pounds, got rid of the diabetes diagnosis and am feeling strong.  I do not believe I would have bounced back from my heart attack as quickly and efficiently as I did if I had not been in such good shape before the episode.  I’ll continue to flesh this out but certainly things are making more sense to me now.

Here is a favorite recipe of mine from John.  You may want to change up some of the ingredients but however you use it please enjoy it.  I do, every morning on my fruit and plain Greek yogurt.[mpprecipe-recipe:1]
