Fire in Alberta

Gardenia 2015

This week was full of news that is both devastating as well as filled with hope.  First and foremost for those of us here in Canada, the fire that is burning out of control in Alberta has taken over the headlines and the news reports.  We have many connections to Fort McMurray here in our little town of North Hatley.  (I always say it all comes back to North Hatley) As of today, all family members are safe and have been evacuated to either Calgary or Edmonton.  One grandchild of a North Hatley family has stayed behind as he is an EMT and firefighter so he is still in Fort McMurray.  Our prayers go out to him and to all the other firefighters and emergency personnel who are there.

What this reminds us is that life can change in a very quick moment therefore we need to rejoice in all the little things that make up our lives.  Food for the soul.  My sister has a quote at the end of her emails that I love “Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile”.   Good words to live by.

Consecration of a Bishop in Quebec City

FullSizeRender (43)

John and I traveled to Quebec City to attend the consecration of the new Co-adjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Quebec, Bruce Myers.  I met Bruce through Facebook a number of years ago and we have continued to keep in touch over the years as he moved from Quebec City to Toronto and back.  He started his career as a news reporter and was using his communication skills in the diocese to share the news through various media which included Facebook.  He is young and that is a good thing.  He brings hope to the church in Quebec.  We wish him luck in this new role that he will be playing.

Enjoying Quebec City

Not ones to let an opportunity pass us by we took the advantage of the trip to enjoy what Quebec City has to offer.  Fabulous restaurants.  We found a little restaurant some years ago in the old part of the city down near the water and we hoped to be able to find itfunicular again.  We did and it is just as cute as it was several years ago.  We walked down as it was a beautiful, sunny, but slightly chilly day.  If you have been to Quebec City, you know that it is a long way down from the Chateau Frontenac area to the city below.  There is a funicular that runs to get you back up the hill.  Here is a picture I found on-line that shows you pretty clearly what it is and you might guess just how steep the climb is.  I don’t like heights much so I don’t really look out the window on the way up but it certainly beats the stairs.  Probably not the right attitude but I don’t like stairs and never have.  Besides, I didn’t have the right shoes on!!  Once, many years ago, I went to Toronto to visit my brother and made the mistake of going up in the CN Tower.  They have outside elevators there.  I couldn’t get back down so I had to call my brother to come and get me and I buried my head in his jacket all the way down – I couldn’t look.  Never, never again!!!!!!!!

We treated ourselves to a very special dinner after the consecration.  It was late, after 9pm which is not recommended as an ideal dinner time, but after all we were in Quebec City.  We went to a restaurant called Le Continental.  It is known for its tableside service.  They make the Caesar Salad right there next to you the way it should be made and they cook their flaming entrees tableside too.  It was fabulous and everything we could imagine.  A once every five years whether you like it or not kind of dinner.  If you are ever in Quebec City do give it a try.

Our exotic tlulu2ravels are done for now.  We will head to New Hampshire again this week and finally repair the damage done to our car by the turkey a few weeks back.  We will also have some time with our grandchildren.  Then golf starts.  It’s that time again. Have a wonderful week everyone.
