Week 34 – Fog outside the door

SeIMG_3824ptember has arrived in Canada.  With it comes cool nights and fog on the lake in the morning.  I walk every morning for about an hour and half around the lake and up and down the hills – good cardio and I love it every day but this week was just gorgeous.  Glorious weather has descended on our little piece of heaven.  We haven’t had weather like this all summer and we are so enjoying it.  Good sleeping and beautiful mornings along with evening boat rides make for a very special time.  It is cool enough to wear a fleece in the shade but too hot to do that in the sun.

It is Labour (Labor) Day in Canada too.  We spell it differently.  The family is here and we are gathering for a big dinner tonight to celebrate the end of summer, the boys going off fishing for a week and the children going back to school.  My mother will go back to Montreal for the winter and soon John and I will migrate south along with the geese who wake us up every morning.  I asked John this morning how they knew.  He said jokingly, they must have an app that tells them.  Seriously I guess it must be the sun and its angle that tells them it is time to head south.  Either way, they are very noisy.

As we gather together to say thank you for another beautiful summer in Canada, Katie, IMG_3836Libby and I were getting our dinner ready.  We are so lucky to have a local farmer who provides us with our meat and chicken all summer long.  We have a “giant” chicken that we are roasting with fresh herbs from my summer garden.  Libby and I harvested them and created a baste and also the accent for the stuffing.  Here we are cooking together, three generations in the kitchen.  What could be better.  I must admit the real cook is Katie and Libby and I are truly the sous-chefs.  We do what we are told to do.

Our school work focused more and more on using Social Media to get our message and brand out in the world.  I am very comfortable with the internet, the web, websites and social media (to a point) and think I have pulled that together pretty well for myself.  Many of my classmates struggle with this piece. This has been my world so I am not afraid to venture into the techno world.  I did, however, learn a few tips that I think will help.  I had a wonderful check in with my accountability coach this week and we are going to meet in person when I head down to New Hampshire to take care of the children while their mother travels for work.  I am looking forward to it very much.  Truly, I am very lucky to have found her.

Last week we went on our adventure to find my friend’s dog and this week we had another unusual situation.  A boat showed up on our beach.  It is a fishing boat and we are quite mystified by it.  We did find out where it came from and it has now gone home but there is no way that boat could have floated here.  The lake and the river flow one way and the boat seems to have floated against the flow.  We will probably never know.

Here is this week’s recipe.  It is the best Carrot Cake ever – no it is not sugar free and it is not something that I would recommend if you are trying to give up sugar but if you want a treat you can’t go wrong with this.  It all started because John wanted to use a mix to make a carrot cake for his fishing trip and we said – No way!  If you haven’t learned anything this year at least you have learned to make things from scratch.
